From Puffers to Power Notes

My Story of Nearly Dying of an Asthma Attack to Becoming a Pro Harmonica Player

Hey, I’m Bryn Scott-Grimes.

When I was a kid, I carried puffers everywhere. I had asthma so bad that I’d wheeze when I'd get even the mildest allergies. In grade five I ended up in the hospital for 3 days - the doctor's told me I nearly died from the sever asthma attack I had just battled.

Something after that called to me—to make my lungs - my greatest weakness, into my greatest super power.

Maybe it was the rawness, the soul, the way it could laugh and cry in the same breath, but the harmonica seemed to call for me. The harmonica, of all things, seemed like the worst idea as an asthmatic, but it turned out to be the best possible thing for me.

So I picked it up anyway.

Over time, what was once my greatest weakness did in fact become my biggest strength. Not only did playing help train my lungs and reshape my breathing—it gave me a voice. I became so obsessed with learning every in and out the instrument that nothing stopped me from bulldozing through every technique I came across, even if it took me years to master some of them.

After graduating with a BA Honors in music, I decided to start passing down my knowledge to others by starting The Bryn Scott-Grimes Harmonica School. I ended up teaching over 3,000 1 on 1 harmonica lessons over the past 12 years establishing myself as one of the most experienced harmonica instructors on the planet.

Today, I make a living as a full-time harmonica player, singer-songwriter, and guitarist based in Nashville.

I’ve played festivals, scored films, performed with award-winning artists, and developed a unique style that fuses blues, folk, show tunes, and wild, soul-bursting harmonica solos. I even created an all-in-one harmonica learning app called BENDR, because I know firsthand how hard it is to find the right help when you're starting out—or hitting a plateau.
